Atoms + Isotopes + Units + Fission + Radiation + Neutrons + Applications
When talking about atoms we need to use very small units in our discussion. Most people are familiar with a metre (m). A thousandth of a metre is a millimetre (mm). A thousandth of a millimetre is a micrometre (µm). A thousandth of a micrometre is a nanometre (nm). A thousandth of a nanometre is a picometre (pm). A thousandth of a picometre is a femtometre (fm). We have learned that the nucleus of an atom is 10,000 times smaller than the overall size of the atom. Atoms range in size from 0.1 to 0.5 nm. Nuclei are around 10 fm in size.
